State Secretary Weingerl Požar attends the MED9 meeting of ministers and state secretaries

SLOVENIA, October 2 - The MED9 group comprises nine Mediterranean EU Member States - Croatia, Cyprus, France, Greece, Italy, Malta, Portugal, Slovenia and Spain, with Croatia holding the MED9 presidency in 2026. The group’s meetings are intended to facilitate the coordination and exchange of views on current European, regional and global issues. The meeting in Trogir focused on preparations for the MED9 Summit scheduled to take place in Split on 7 October.

State Secretary Weingerl Požar emphasised that the debate on the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) is crucial for the long-term future of the EU. She pointed out that particular attention must be paid to striking the right balance between new investment priorities and ensuring adequate funding for the EU’s core policies, particularly the Cohesion Policy and the Common Agricultural Policy, as these form the basis of resilience, sustainable growth and convergence. The discussion revealed that the MED9 countries hold similar views on these issues.

Representatives of the MED9 countries discussed the security aspects of the enlargement process. The State Secretary highlighted that EU enlargement remains one of the EU’s most important strategic policies, representing a significant investment in peace, security, stability and prosperity across Europe. She stated that the future of the Western Balkans lies in the European Union, adding that the enlargement process must be credible, fair and based on the achievements of individual countries. However, it should also be more dynamic, predictable and tangible for citizens.

State Secretary Požar expressed Slovenia’s concerns regarding the instability and uncertainty in the wider Mediterranean region. In this context, she emphasised the importance of EU Member States in the Mediterranean region taking a joint approach to safeguarding their shared interests.
