Labour Party Retains Power in Malta After Fourth Straight Election Victory

(MENAFN) Malta’s Labour Party has emerged victorious in Sunday’s snap parliamentary election, extending its hold on power for a fourth consecutive term.

Prime Minister Robert Abela, who also leads the Labour Party, told local media that the result represented a historic milestone for the party, marking an unprecedented fourth successive victory. He added that the government would now move forward with implementing its campaign promises, while also appealing for calm and unity across the country, encouraging supporters to celebrate in a respectful manner.

From the opposition side, Nationalist Party secretary-general Charles Bonello acknowledged the outcome after visiting the vote-counting centre. He stated that preliminary figures indicated a Labour win by roughly 18,000 votes, as reported by local media.

Nationalist Party leader Alex Borg also responded to the result in a video posted on social media, confirming that he had contacted Abela to congratulate him. He emphasized acceptance of the public’s decision, saying: "The people have spoken, and we must respect their wishes," he said.

"It's not the result we wanted, but it's a very clear message. We will keep working to be a strong alternative for the country."

The final official tally, along with the complete list of elected lawmakers, is expected to be released later on Sunday or in the early hours of Monday.

This win also marks Abela’s second electoral mandate as both Labour Party leader and prime minister. He assumed leadership of the party in 2020 after Joseph Muscat stepped down and later guided Labour to another general election victory in 2022.
